NON-OCCUPATIONAL POST-EXPOSURE PROPHYLAXIS (nPEP)
Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is a type of antiviral therapy for HIV designed to reduce the possibility of infection with the virus after a known high-risk exposure has occurred.
Administered by HDAP, this state-funded service was designed to cover the cost of HIV prophylaxis for individuals who potentially have been non-occupationally exposed to HIV (nPEP) and who have no health insurance. The goal of nPEP is to prevent additional HIV transmission. Because of the nature of PEP treatment, individuals need to receive medications within a very narrow time period after their possible exposure. The nPEP program was adapted to respond to the unique challenges of providing immediate access to this important treatment intervention.
nPEP treatment is made available to individuals through healthcare providers who are enrolled in the program. Access to the program is available throughout Massachusetts and is linked to primary care sites.
To enroll in the HIV Non-Occupational Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (nPEP) Drug Reimbursement program, interested healthcare sites can complete a site enrollment/agreement form and identify a local pharmacy where nPEP prescriptions are to be filled.
